Square Enix Discontinues Core Online Game Streaming Service

core-onlineThe folks over at Square Enix has just discontinued its game streaming service which is known as Core Online, and this particular bit of news is a rather disappointing development – it has happened a mere 18 months after the Core Online service was launched. Apparently, what has been described as a “limited commercial take-up” resulted in the discontinuation of the Core Online game streaming service.

According to Square Enix’s support page for Core Online, it claimed that “Core Online was released as an experiment to see what demand there would be for HD games played via the browser. However, due to limited commercial take-up of this initiative, Core Online closed on Friday 29th November 2013.” Apart from that, it has been confirmed by Square Enix that they do not have any immediate or future plans to reopen this particular service.

Previously, Core Online enabled users to stream a range of classic Square titles straight through their browser, where among them include the likes of Hitman: Blood Money, Tomb Raider: Underworld and Mini Ninjas. After that, gamers could purchase the game there and then, forking out $2.99 monthly for unlimited access, or opt to play for free for up to 20 minutes each day.
