These days we’re starting to see a rise in animated series based around video games. Netflix has actually enjoyed a fair amount of success with their series like Castlevania and are looking to develop more titles, so it doesn’t come as a surprise to learn that maybe Square Enix wants something similar for themselves as well.

According to a report from Kidscreen, it seems that Square Enix could be interested in creating an animated series based on Final Fantasy 9. This will be a joint project between Square Enix and Paris-based Cyber Group Studios. There is currently no date for a release yet but according to Cyber Group Studios’ CEO Pierre Sissmann, they are finishing up a project bible that they will then pitch to broadcasters in the coming months where they are hoping that production could begin by the end of 2021 or early 2022.

Sissman believes that this series could appeal to both newbies to Final Fantasy as well as fans who have loved the franchise for years. “The games have a strong co-viewing potential. For those who do know Final Fantasy IX , this will be an [introduction]. And for the many who don’t, this will immerse them in a universe they’ll love.”

If this series is successful, there are a lot of doors to open here. This is because there are many titles in the Final Fantasy franchise and we’re sure that many would love to see their favorite version of the game get made into an animated series for if and when that time comes.
