Unfortunately today BlackBerry isn’t what it used to be, at least amongst regular users. They still have their fans amongst the enterprise and government sector, but apparently that is a niche market that BlackBerry does not want to pigeonhole themselves into. Speaking in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, BlackBerry’s CEO, John Chen, was quoted as saying that he did not want the company to be headed towards a niche direction.
“No, why would I do a niche thing? I got a lot of CEO offers before. I’d like to become a strong software and infrastructure provider of everything that connects to each other.” Chen adds that with BlackBerry’s portfolio of patents and experience when it comes to security, that they will be able to leverage that to encourage customers to purchase BlackBerry products.
“Why would people buy from BlackBerry? Partly because of the know-how, patents and security. Today I’m building toward those goals. It will take a while but I have to first return the company to profitability.” It sounds like an ambitious goal but what do you guys think? With the consumer market being extremely saturated with companies like Apple, Samsung, LG, HTC, Sony, Nokia, and more, does BlackBerry have a fighting chance?
