Motorola offers a “Google Play Edition” variant of its popular Moto G smartphone and today that particular variant has received a new software update. This new update jumps one iteration of the OS as it takes the Moto G GPE straight from Android 4.4.2 to Android 4.4.4. Since these are incremental updates anyway its not like users will be missing out on any major features. Still given the fact that they bring importance security and stability improvements, its best not to waste any time in download said update.

Google Play Edition devices are next in line after Google’s Nexus devices for new software updates. They’re geared towards customers who don’t want a customized Android experience and want to receive timely OS updates. The software experience remains in Google’s hands for these devices and it is able to roll out updates faster.

As expected from an incremental update the changelog is not at all descriptive. Android 4.4.4 for Moto G Google Play Edition brings security and stability improvements apart from fixing bugs. Users might notice slightly improved performance as well after updating to the latest software.

Rooted devices will be able to receive this over-the-air update as well but users will have to re-root their devices when it has been installed. The update should automatically pop up on all units since its being rolled out OTA.
