Prior to officially unveiling its first smartphone, nascent manufacturer OnePlus ran a big campaign to create hype for the device. It was due to release the OnePlus One this week but at the very last moment the company announced it was delaying the release due to an OpenSSL bug. Such software-related issues are not unheard of in the industry but for OnePlus it was crucial to deliver quickly and get the devices out as soon as possible, after all, first impressions leave a lasting mark. With the issue taken care of the OnePlus One finally releases today.

Now its not like you can walk into a local retailer or carrier outlet and pick one up. An invitation is required before you can actually purchase the device directly from OnePlus. Customers who received their invites early will see their units being shipped today.

Fret not if you were not one of the few to snag up an invite. OnePlus confirms that invitations will continue to be rolled out on a “continuous basis.” Though it would probably take considerable time for a full-fledged public release when potential customers don’t have to wait around for invites anymore.

Vulnerabilities were found on the device’s OpenSSL encryption protocol which prompted the CyanogenMod team to develop and issue a patch for the OnePlus One at the last moment. The release had to be delayed for re-certification and QA testing.
