Not All Lumia Smartphones Will Get Windows 10 Or Support All Features

At its event yesterday Microsoft finally showed off Windows 10. The company also revealed how the new software looks like on Lumia handsets. It has promised to release a preview at some point next month so that Windows Phone smartphone owners can take it for a spin themselves. In an update on the official blog today Microsoft has clarified that yesterday’s announcement doesn’t mean that all Lumia devices will receive the Windows 10 update, and that those who do get it, might not support all of the features that have been unveiled.

The clarification comes from Chris Weber, corporate vice president of sales for Microsoft Mobile Devices, on the official Lumia conversations blog. Weber says that Microsoft’s goal is for “majority of the Lumia phones running Windows Phone 8 and 8.1” to jump on the new bandwagon.

He does point out that not every phone will upgrade or support all possible Windows 10 features. Some new features and experiences that Microsoft has built into Windows 10 will require advanced hardware so Lumia users should keep that in mind if they’re thinking of picking up a new device.

This isn’t something out of the blue. It is common for software companies to drop support for older devices. Some of the very first Windows Phone 8 devices are over two years old now and they can’t possibly support all of the new features, or have the hardware compatibility needed to offer the right user experience with the new software.
