Nintendo NX’s Features Possibly Hinted At In Patent Filing

nintendo-logoThe Nintendo NX will be the Japanese gaming company’s next-gen console. What exactly the console looks like or what kind of features it will pack is really anyone’s guess since Nintendo is playing it pretty close to the chest at the moment. However thanks to the eagle-eyed NeoGAF readers, a recently discovered Nintendo patent might be able to clue us in.

The patent was filed back in February meaning that it is relatively recent, and when you consider that the Nintendo NX was officially announced in March, it hardly seems like a coincidence. Of course there is always the possibility that the two might not be related at all, but we reckon it’s a bit too much of a coincidence, don’t you think?

Moving on, the patent describes how the console will lack an optical drive. This is interesting since consoles today still rely on discs to deliver their games. Instead it seems to suggest that it will rely on a hard drive that gamers can then download content onto it and store it, kind of like consoles at the moment.

The patent also talks about the console’s controller which will apparently have its own display unit, similar to that of the Wii U’s GamePad. Taking a step back, it sounds like the Wii U minus a disc drive, but hopefully it will be more than that. Like we said there’s no guarantee that the patent filed has anything to do with the NX, but if anything it does hint at what Nintendo has been thinking up of.
