Apple Publishes Top 25 Apps Affected By XcodeGhost Malware

top_25_malwareEarlier this week there was a bit of fuss regarding Apple’s iOS apps and how some of them got infected by malware and still managed to sneak onto the iTunes App Store. Now for those who are curious and want to learn more about the malware or the apps that have been infected by it, Apple has published an official list of the top 25 apps.

These aren’t the only apps infected by the malware, but they are the most popular apps amongst them. For the most part they seem to be in line with what security researchers at Palo Alto Networks published earlier this week. The best thing to do in this situation is that if you have any of these apps installed, you should delete them and download the new and updated version.

For those who are hearing about this for the first time, earlier this week a bunch of reputable apps got infected by malware but still made it onto the iTunes App Store. Given how careful Apple’s review process is, one might think that something like this would not have happened, right?

However it turns out that hackers managed to get their hands on Apple’s developer tool kit and infected it with malware. Since China developers tend to download the tool kit via third-party servers, they were not protected by the security measures Apple put into place, thus leading them to unknowingly infect their own apps.

Thankfully to date there have not been any reports of users who might have been hacked or affected by the malware.
