Electric cars are the future which is why so many of the old manufacturers that have only made internal combustion engine-powered cars for decades are now getting in on the action as well. Some companies that have traditionally made supercars are giving EVs a shot as well while trying to maintain the legendary performance that their customers expect. Aston Martin is one of those manufacturers and it’s going to make an electric car as well.

The company today announced the launch of a joint venture with LeEco, a major Chinese consumer electronics group, for the purpose of developing Aston’s first electric car.

Aston Martin and LeEco are planning to come up with an electric car that’s based on the former’s Rapide S sports car. This will basically be a test case and if both companies see potential in the partnership they might work on future electric car models as well.

At a press conference in Frankfurt, Germany, Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer said that this partnership brings the company’s electric car project forward, adding that the vehicle is expected to come to market by 2018.

The platform these companies develop could also benefit Faraday Future, the press release says, Faraday Future is a new start up working on electric cars, it’s backed by Chinese billionaire Jia Yueting.
