The Raspberry Pi is a perfect little computer which in the hands of a developer can prove to be very capable. It has been refreshed multiple times over the past few years and several accessories have also been released for it. The latest accessory is much better than the first official accessory for the Raspberry Pi which was a 5 megapixel camera module from Omnivision.

Since the previous OmniVision sensor reached its end of like by the end of 2014 it was about time that a new camera accessory for Raspberry Pi was created. A conversation was struck up with Sony’s image sensor division and thus, Raspberry Pi now has an 8 megapixel camera accessory from the company.

The latest accessories for the Raspberry Pi include two new 8 megapixel camera sensors from Sony which cost $25. It’s Sony’s IMX219 sensor which is a fixed-focus sensor and can provide photos in 3280×2464 pixel resolution as well as 1080p videos at 30 frames-per-second.

This particular camera sensor was chosen for the impressive image quality that it provides as well as the exceptional colour fidelity for a sensor its size and the low-light performance.

Immediate availability of both the visible-light and infrared cameras based on Sony’s IMX219 8 megapixel camera sensor has been announced today for $25. They can be purchased today from Raspberry Pi partners starting today, partners include element14 and RS Components.
