That being said, obviously when it comes to smartphones there is a problem as the size of the phone can be rather restrictive, especially when you consider the fact that there are other components/features that need to be accounted for. However according to a report from Photo Rumors, Samsung could be making some headway.
The report claims that Samsung is working on creating a smartphone sensor 1/2.3-inches in size, but ultimately their goal is to create an even larger sensor that is 1/1.7-inches with an aperture of f/1.4. Right now Sony is pretty much leading the way with their 1/2.5-inch sensor found in the Galaxy S7, but if Samsung can do this, it will give Sony a run for their money.
Along with the report of a potentially larger sensor, it also claims that future smartphone cameras from Samsung will adopt a UI similar to those found on their NX cameras. If you are familiar with the NX cameras then this might be a welcome sight. No word on when that will happen so until we hear from Samsung officially, take it with a grain of salt for now.
