The thing about drones is that they’re small and compact, meaning that they can reach places that humans can’t. This is why they can come in handy in search and rescue operations where rescue workers can use drones to scout out an area before deciding on the best strategy, especially more so if the area is dangerous to begin with.
However sometimes drones can be delicate meaning that if they hit a wall, they might be damaged and stop working, and this is where the Elios drone comes in. Created by Swiss-based company Flyability, the Elios drone has been designed specifically for the purpose of inspection and exploration.
As you can see in the video above, the design of the Elios drone is very different from the more common quadcopters in the market today. The drone has some kind of shell around it which allows it to bounce off surfaces without damaging the actual unit. There is also a freely rotating carbon-fiber exoskeleton that spins on a separate axis, all of which helps to keep the camera and lighting system stabilized.
Like we said, this makes the Elios ideal for exploring dangerous areas such as caves, collapsed buildings, glaciers, chemical spill sites, and more.
