Instagram ‘Stories’ Launched, Not That Different From Snapchat Stories

Instagram today announced the launch of a new feature called “Stories” and if the name sounds familiar, that’s because it’s basically the same as Snapchat Stories. Just like Snapchat Stories, Instagram Stories enable users to post photo and video slideshows that will disappear after 24 hours. Instagram will display users’ Stories at the top of the feed where they will remain for 24 hours before disappearing forever.

Instagram users will see stories from people they follow in a bar at the top of their feed. When one of the people they follow posts something new, their profile photo will automatically get a colorful ring around it.

To view their story users just have to tap on their profile photo. Tap once to go back and forward or swipe to jump to another user’s story. Users can also tap and send a private message to the person who made the story if they have something to say about it. There will be no likes or public comments on stories like regular Instagram posts.

Privacy settings for stories will be the same as the settings of the account, so if the account is set to private, the story will only be visible to approved followers. Users always have the option to hide their entire story from anyone they don’t want to see it, even if that person follows them.

Instagram Stories will be rolled out to all users in the coming weeks on iOS and Android.
