Google Acquires Smartwatch OS Maker Cronologics

cronologicsBased on the numbers that we’ve seen from the IDC, the market for smartwatches isn’t doing so hot at the moment. It seems that demand for smartwatches isn’t quite as strong compared to other wearables such as fitness bands created by the likes of Fitbit or Xiaomi. In fact companies like Motorola have announced that they’ll be taking a break from smartwatches.

However despite that, it seems that Google plans on soldiering on with their smartwatch efforts because they have acquired a company by the name of Cronologics. For those unfamiliar, Cronologics is a company that was trying to build its own smartwatch platform, although in today’s market with companies like Apple, Samsung, and Google running the show, it would be pretty hard for them to break into the market.

In an announcement on its website, “Today, we’re excited to announce the next phase of our journey — we are joining Google to help grow the portfolio of watches powered by Android Wear. We see strong alignment with Android Wear’s mission and look forward to working with our new colleagues at Google to continue pushing the frontier of wearable technology and smartwatches with Android Wear 2.0 and beyond.”

Based on this it sounds like maybe Cronologics’ plans for their own platform are pretty much dead, although there is a good chance that whatever they were working on could be integrated into future builds of Android Wear.
