New Lenovo Project Tango Phone Might Be Released In 2017

Google introduced Project Tango about two years ago. The idea is to use special sensors on a mobile device to map 3D spaces for augmented reality applications. Lenovo was the first to come out with a Project Tango device, the Phab2 Pro. The device has received mixed reviews but that was to be expected since it’s a first-generation device. It appears that the company might be working on a new Project Tango phone that could be launched in 2017.

As previously mentioned, Lenovo was the first manufacturer to launch a smartphone with Project Tango technology built in. This particular product category is nascent at this point in time and the company would certainly be hoping that it grows in the future.

Jeff Merideth, General Manager of Android and Chrome at Lenovo, said recently that because other manufacturers are going to launch new Project Tango phones in 2017 it would only make sense for Lenovo to follow up the Phab2 Pro with another handset. Lenovo would be ahead of the pack because it would be making a second-generation Project Tango smartphone while its rivals come out with their first-generation devices.

There are only a few dozen apps available in the Google Play Store right now that truly take advantage of Project Tango’s depth-sensing capabilities. Developers who picked up the Phab2 Pro are likely to put out more apps and that would surely contribute to increasing demand for Project Tango smartphones.
