Samsung Appears To Be Working On A Drone

Samsung doesn’t just make smartphones and tablets. It makes some great wearable devices and has even tested the waters with its Gear 360 virtual reality camera. Could a drone be the next logical step for the company’s Gear program? Patent applications show that Samsung has been working on the idea of building a drone. The latest patent application shows that Samsung’s drone might have a circular design.

It was also reported last year that Samsung had set up a separate team to work on drones but nothing concrete has materialized yet. New patents reveal that the work continues even though the company hasn’t confirmed anything yet.

Samsung filed for this particular patent back in April this year. It shows the drone having a very simple circular design with a large fan in the middle with foldable legs at the bottom. The drone also has a camera.

It’s an interesting take on a product that hasn’t really reached mass market potential yet. Drones costing a few hundred dollars or more are only really bought by enthusiasts so it’s not like Samsung would immediately stand to make a lot of money from this endeavor.

Samsung may continue working on the product but may not launch it until the market situation improves. One can’t deny that Samsung fans wouldn’t mind having a drone that they can control using its smartphones or smartwatches but it all depends on whether the idea makes business sense for the company.
