Netflix Releases HDR Video Support For Android

We’ve known for quite some time now and Netflix is going to bring HDR video streaming to Android-powered mobile devices. There are two smartphones on the market today that have mobile HDR-certified displays so when Netflix flips the switch on this feature, those who own those devices will be able to benefit from it. Netflix today released support for HDR video streaming on Android but there is one caveat.

Android users can stream video in HDR from Netflix starting today. The caveat is that it has only enabled support for just one of those two smartphones. It’s only the LG G6 that will be able to allow its owners to stream HDR content from Netflix.

Netflix is relying on the Dolby Vision specification for mobile HDR vision. Only the LG G6 offers support for this specification which is why it’s the only smartphone to get support for HDR streaming right now.

When other smartphones with Dolby Vision HDR support arrive in the future, Netflix HDR streaming will work with them as well. The Galaxy S8 has been left out for now as it only has support for the Mobile HDR Premium specification that’s not supported by Netflix at this point in time for HDR streaming.

When it’s going to do that, remains to be seen.
