90% Of All Video Game Sales Expected To Be Digital By 2021

It is no secret that many gamers are turning to digital when it comes to purchasing their games. This is because digital games are a lot more convenient than a physical, where you would have to swap out discs/cartridges, and if you lose it that’s it, not to mention it takes up space too. Whereas with digital, once you’ve downloaded it you don’t have to worry about it anymore.

This is why we’re seeing figures indicating that digital sales of video games are outpacing that of physical. In fact EA believes that 40% of all console game sales could be digital downloads by the end of 2017. Now according to projections from IDATE DigiWorld Research, they are predicting that by 2021, 90% of video game sales are expected to be of the digital variety.

They have also predicted that revenue made from global digital game sales to grow from €48.1 billion in 2017 to €73.1 billion in 2021. Like we said, the convenience of digital games doesn’t really make these predictions new or come as a surprise. However we doubt that physical game sales will ever completely die out.

After all some gamers do prefer physical for the artwork, or maybe for collection purposes, and also potential resale value, where with digital you would not really be able to resell your games once you’ve bought them.
