There is still an ongoing debate as to whether digital purchases or physical purchases are better. Some argue that physical purchases are more worth it since you get a physical copy of the game, the box, manual, and so on. Others believe digital downloads are more convenient especially on launch day.

Regardless of your stance, it seems that EA is pretty optimistic about the state of digital downloads. During a recent financial call, EA predicted that by the end of 2017, more than 40% of console game purchases will be from digital downloads, which means that if EA’s predictions were to come true, we are inching closer towards that 50% mark.

Interestingly enough despite EA’s predictions, the company doesn’t think that they will be contributing much to that number. This is because according to the company’s CFO Blake Jorgensen, quite a few of EA’s bigger selling franchises such as FIFA are being sold in markets where internet speeds still aren’t quite fast enough, thus resulting in consumers relying on physical purchases instead.

That is one of the arguments that can be made for physical, where should internet connectivity become spotty or unstable, you’ll still have the disc that you can install it with. Either way we guess we’ll just have to wait and see if EA’s predictions come true.
