Apple Supplier Reportedly Receives Huge Orders For 3D Sensing Component

A popular iPhone 8 rumor that has been making its rounds for a while is that the handset could come with a new security system, which is through facial recognition and could potentially also replace Touch ID on the iPhone. Now thanks to a report by analyst Gene Munster, there is more evidence to suggest that this rumor could be true.

There have been quite a bit of evidence so far spotted inside the leaked HomePod firmware, but in case you needed more proof, hopefully this will help. According to Munster, it seems that one of Apple’s suppliers Lumentum has received a huge order for 3D sensing laser components that is rumored to be included in the iPhone 8. Munster states that the company has received $200 million in orders during the quarter, versus $5 million in revenue during the June quarter.

While just about anyone could have possibly ordered those components, for such a huge order it can only come from a company who has need for that many units, which narrows down the list considerably. Like we said, facial recognition is one of the rumored features of the iPhone 8 but it is expected to be a more robust system compared to what we’ve seen so far.

For example one of the rumored features of the iPhone 8 is that users can unlock the phone even when the phone is lying flat on the table, and that users can silence notification sounds as long as they are looking at their phone (which presumably means they are acknowledging it).
