HBO Hack Feared To Be Seven Times Larger Than Sony

You may remember that a couple of years ago, Sony was the victim of a devastating cyberattack that led to the leak of one of its new movies and also shut down the company’s entire email network. It was disastrous for Sony and it took months for the company to get its systems back online properly. HBO’s systems were recently compromised and according to a new report, the HBO hack is feared to be seven times larger than the Sony hack.

Hackers who compromised HBO’s systems leaked a couple of episodes of shows like Ballers and even the script for next week’s Game of Thrones episode. The hackers said that they would leak more content in the days to come.

It’s unclear if they have made a ransom demand to HBO in exchange for not leaking anything else. Reports suggest that hackers have obtained 1.5TB of data from HBO’s systems.

HBO has not confirmed the details of the hack but has acknowledged that one did happen. “HBO recently experienced a cyber incident, which resulted in the compromise of proprietary information. We immediately began investigating the incident and are working with law enforcement and outside cyber-security firms,” it said.

Some believe that internal documents, video footage, and emails could be leaked next. On the other hand, HBO CEO Richard Plepler has told staff in a note today that the company’s email system has not been compromised, adding that “the forensic review is ongoing.”
