LG Clears The Air Regarding The LG V30’s Camera Aperture

One of the LG V30’s main marketing points is that it sports a camera with an aperture of f/1.6, which is the widest aperture found on a smartphone to date. However early reviews of the phone found that after taking a look at the data in the photos that the aperture revealed was actually f/1.7.

Now to the layman the difference of an aperture of 0.1 might not make much of a difference, but if true it completely invalidates the company’s claims. It was speculated that maybe it was a software error that caused the aperture to be displayed wrongly, but LG has since issued a statement to media outlets like The Verge saying that it was done on purpose so as not to spoil the surprise ahead of the reveal.

The statement reads, “Before unveiling a new product, LG Electronics safeguards confidential and proprietary device information by masking the true values of important product specifications. Some preproduction preview sample devices recently distributed featured non-final software, which maintained masked information with regard to aperture. The LG V30 features an F1.6 aperture camera and glass lens, an industry leading innovation.”

We’re not sure why they felt the need to hide anything especially since LG themselves were the ones who announced the camera’s aperture before the phone was announced, but in any case LG has since reassured customers that the LG V30 does indeed have an f/1.6 aperture and that retail units will show just that.
