Samsung’s New AI Chips Will Reportedly Outdo Apple And Huawei

A new report out of South Korea claims that Samsung is nearly done with the development of its neural processing units or artificial intelligence chips for both servers and mobile devices. The new chips will enable the company to enhance artificial intelligence capabilities on these devices. The report also mentions that Samsung is aiming to outdo similar chips from Apple and Huawei.

Apple and Huawei have both put out smartphones on the market with dedicated neural processing units – the iPhone X and Mate 10 Pro respectively. The dedicated AI chips provide additional functionality on the handsets and their abilities improve over time as they learn the user’s habits and preferences.

The report claims that Samsung has already reached the technological levels of Apple and Huawei for its neural processing units and that it’s going to come out with even better chips in the second half of this year, presumably for the Galaxy Note 9.

It’s also claimed that Samsung is going to highlight some of the capabilities of its new NPU chip at the Galaxy S9 launch event which the company has already confirmed is going to take place at the Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona next month.

While Samsung hasn’t confirmed anything about the progress of its NPU development, a PR official for the company did confirm to the Korea Herald that “Development of AI chips is underway led by Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology.”
