Samsung’s New DeX Pad Could Have A Different Form Factor

Samsung introduced the DeX Station accessory with the Galaxy S8 last year. It enables the handset to provide a PC-like interface when it’s connected to an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse using this accessory. Samsung made the Galaxy Note 8 compatible with DeX as well so it’s clear that the company wants this platform to stick around. It appears that Samsung is developing a new form factor for its DeX accessory. The one that it launches with the Galaxy S9 this year may be called DeX Pad instead.

Samsung has filed a new trademark with the European Union Intellectual Property Office for “DEX PAD.” This can be taken as an indication that the company is going to launch a new DeX accessory with the Galaxy S9 this year.

Reports suggest that instead of a dock, the new accessory is going to function more like a wireless charging pad. Since the handset will lie flat on the pad, the new form factor can also enable the handset to double as a touchpad for the desktop environment.

That being said, the requirement for an external monitor and keyboard will remain for those who want to take full advantage of the desktop experience powered by DeX. Samsung introduced new software for DeX when the Note 8 was announced a few months back so it’s likely that we may also see some DeX-related software improvements when the Galaxy S9 is launched.

Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ at the Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona next month.
