NYPD Officially Moves On From Windows Phone To The iPhone 7

At one point in time, mobile platforms like iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry were all battling for a slice of the pie, with organizations such as the NYPD opting to get on board with Microsoft’s Windows Phone. However fast forward to 2018 and it looks like the NYPD is done with Windows Phone and have since moved on to the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.

In a report from the New York Daily News (via 9to5Mac), it appears that the plan to shift to the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus has already begun, with officers in Manhattan receiving their department-issued iPhones. The program is expected to begin in Manhattan first before it is eventually brought over to Brooklyn and then Queens.

Prior to this, officers were issued Windows Phone handsets in the form of the Lumia 640 XL and the Lumia 830. Granted the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus aren’t the latest iPhones available, but we reckon it should be good enough to get the job done and then some. So far it seems that there are some police officers who are pretty chuffed with their new devices, with one Police Officer Christopher Clampitt quoted as saying, “I truly feel like it’s the ultimate tool to have as a patrol cop.”

Overall it seems that the use of smartphones has helped officers respond to situations faster, where NYPD Deputy Commissioner for Information and Technology Jessica Tisch said that response times to critical crimes in progress has dropped by 14%.
