Several years ago, former Blizzard employees launched their own studio, Carbine Studio, and put together an MMORPG in the form of WildStar. It was met with a lot of excitement, as is usually the case whenever former Blizzard employees launch new projects, but it seemed that interest quickly fizzled and the game ended up adopting the free-to-play model.

Now it looks like the game will be shutting down for good as NCSoft, the parent company of Carbine, has announced and confirmed that Carbine will be shutting down. As a result of the studio closing, so will WildStar in which they will begin the process that will ultimately close the game for good.

According to the publisher, “These decisions are very difficult to make and we are in the midst of shifting as many of our teammates as possible into other roles within the organization.” For players who are still playing the game and who might have made any kind of purchases in recent times, NCSoft will be refunding them as long as they have made those purchases after the 1st of July.

It is unfortunate to see the studio and the game close as it showed a lot of potential, such as a very complex combat system which while promising, ended up being a bit too complicated for many players to get into.
