Google Maps ‘Follow’ Feature Lets You Track Your Favorite Places

Want to know if your favorite store is having a sale? Or want to know when a particularly hyped-up restaurant/cafe/bar is finally opening? Social media is generally a good place to find out that kind of information, but Google has since introduced a new way for you to get information about those kind of things.

Google has announced that they’ll be introducing a new “Follow” feature to Google Maps. As its name implies, this lets you follow certain locations so that you’ll be updated whenever there are announcements, changes, upcoming events, and so on. “Those using Google Maps for Android can now follow places right from the app. Rolling out now, just search for that coffee shop you love or that clothing store you’ve been meaning to pop into and tap the ‘Follow’ button. Once you’ve followed places, news from them—like events, offers and other updates—will appear in the For you tab (where available, with more countries coming soon!).”

Google also notes that places that have yet to open can now create a business profile up to 3 months in advance of them opening. This means that users will now be able to follow businesses and locations ahead of their official opening so that they will be informed the minute they are open. However as Google points out, the Follow feature is limited to Android for now but we imagine that it will eventually find its way to iOS as well.
