OnePlus 6T Won’t Come With Wireless Charging

OnePlus 6T will be a smartphone of many firsts for the company. It’s the first OnePlus device with an in-display fingerprint sensor and the first to ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack. It’s also the first OnePlus device to get carrier recognition in the country, T-Mobile will be carrying it. The same does not extend to wireless charging, though, as the company has confirmed that its new device won’t feature wireless charging.

OnePlus co-founder and CEO Pete Lau confirmed to CNET that the OnePlus 6T won’t feature wireless charging. He also touched on the decision to remove the headphone jack, saying that “This has been one of the most difficult decisions for us to make.”

He acknowledges that one of the main reasons the headphone jack has been ditched is to make room for the in-display fingerprint sensor. OnePlus will be calling this feature Screen Unlock. The sensor takes up space inside the device, near the bottom of the phone, so the headphone jack had to go.

OnePlus released its own Bluetooth earbuds called Bullets Wireless earlier this year. It’s a subtle nudge to customers that they should be shifting over to wireless headphones. Bullets Wireless sold out within minutes in some regions so it appears that OnePlus fans have got the message. That won’t save the company from taking flak from those who still love their wired headphones, though.

Lau also mentioned that the OnePlus 6T has better water resistance compared to all of its predecessors. It can easily handle a drop in the sink of a splash in rain. The company doesn’t go for official IP ratings because it doesn’t feel the cost of an official IP certification is worth it.
