Nokia 5 (2017) Receives Android 9 Pie Update

HMD Global launched the Nokia 5 back in 2017. The affordable device was well received as it had decent specs for its price segment. The handset launched with Nougat on board and has since been updated to Android 8.0 and Android 8.1 Oreo. It’s now receiving the Android 9 Pie update. This will most likely be the last major Android platform update for this device.

Juho Sarvikas, HMD Global’s Chief Product Officer, confirmed on Twitter today that the company has started rolling out the Android 9 Pie update for the Nokia 5 (2017). The update is rolling out over-the-air so it may take a couple of days before it becomes available for everyone.

It’s interesting to note that this device was released before HMD Global released a handful of Android One devices that are promised swift updates. This probably doesn’t sit well with Nokia 5.1 owners, since it’s an Android One device and yet it’s currently on Android Oreo. It should receive the Android 9 update at some point later in this quarter.

The Nokia 5 (2017) is a bonafide mid-range smartphone with its 5.2 inch display, Snapdragon 430 processor, and 2GB RAM. If you picked one up over the years, rejoice, as you will now get the latest Android OS experience on this device.
