U.S. Firms May Be Allowed To Resume Business With Huawei Soon

The U.S. administration said recently that it would ease restrictions on Huawei as the United States and China try to find a way forward from the ongoing trade dispute. According to a new report, the administration may allow companies in the United States to conduct business with Huawei once again within two to four weeks.

Citing a senior U.S. official, Reuters reports that the administration may approve licenses for companies to restart sales to Huawei in as little as two weeks. The companies had previously been barred from conducting business with Huawei after it was added to a Commerce Department list in May which prevents it from sourcing goods and services from American companies unless they obtain licenses from the administration.

However, President Donald Trump had said following a meeting with Chinese president Xi Jinping that American companies would be allowed to sell products to Huawei. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross later said that licenses would be issued as long as there was no threat to national security.

A spokesperson for Huawei said that these restrictions “should be removed altogether, rather than have temporary licenses applied for US vendors,” reiterating that “Huawei has been found guilty of no relevant wrongdoing and represents no cybersecurity risk to any country so the restrictions are unmerited.”
