Dual SIM 5G Smartphones Could Be Coming In 2020

These days, finding a dual SIM smartphone is pretty easy, whereby both SIM card slots can support dual LTE connectivity. The same cannot be said for 5G, at least not yet, but MediaTek thinks that come 2020, we can start to expect dual SIM 5G smartphones thanks to the company’s new Dimensity 5G system-on-chip.

According to MediaTek, they claim that the Dimensity 1000 will be the first SoC that will be capable of supporting 5G on both SIMs, where you will be able to enjoy the speeds of 5G without compromising or sacrificing speed. The company boasts that its chipset will be capable of achieving downstream speeds of up to 4.7Gbps, and upstream speeds of up to 2.5Gbps on sub-6GHz 5G networks.

That being said, the company does not mention which phones will be using its new chipsets, so we’ll have to wait and see. Even then, we should point out that if it wasn’t already obvious, MediaTek’s place in the SoC market isn’t quite as dominant compared to the likes of Qualcomm.

The majority of the mainstream and flagship phones we are seeing in the market today are typically powered by Qualcomm, so don’t expect to see these chipsets find their way into flagship devices from Samsung, Huawei, OnePlus, LG, or Google. We expect that Qualcomm is probably working on a similar solution so we probably won’t have to wait too long to see that materialize either.
