HUD specs pile on the cool factor

The Germans and English have collaborated to bring HUD shades that are actually stylish unlike the extra large virtual reality headsets of yore. Targeting athletes, this pair of specs receive their information wirelessly from a watch. Both heart rate and speed are projected from a 160 x 120 pixel LED array in the arm onto a prism that’s embedded in the lens. Numbers that float at the edge of the runner’s view make for easy reference at a glance. Despite the image projected occupying up to 12% of the field of sight, that does not disrupt normal vision since our brains were wired to take information from the other eye to make up the difference. The Informance glasses, as it is called, are currently being tested and ought to see a commercial release in 2009, retailing between €700 to €1000.
