Best Buy: Tablets Not Ready to Displace Netbooks

Although Best Buy has announced that the retailer will expand its lineup of tablet computers in time for the holiday shopping season, the company isn’t banking on tablets displacing netbooks anytime soon. Best Buy is saying that it’s too early to tell how consuers will react to tablets and use the computing device in their lives, referencing the iPad‘s unique role as a media consumption device rather than one that’s geared towards production, such as creating content.

Shawn Score, head of Best Buy’s mobile division says, “In the short horizon, I don’t see any device categories going away.” According to Shawn, consumers still need more information about tablets and what they can do with the device in comparison to netbooks, notebooks, smartphones, and other devices. “It will take consumers some time to figure out how many devices they’re willing to have.”

While Best Buy will be adding more tablets to its lineup, the company is saying that this effort won’t be displacing any other products from its stores.
