Wireless Broadband Enabler (WiBi) devices start to ship

British startup Deltenna’s latest offering to the world would be the “Wireless Broadband Enabler” range of devices, otherwise known as WiBi for those who prefer to be more concise in their speech. What does WiBi offer? Well, you might have come across this concept that takes a regular 3G modem which is hooked up to a wireless network, churning out a Wi-Fi signal so that others can hitch a ride on the same connection. WiBi won’t be that portable as it sits on your desk, boasting a quartet of antennas within which will automatically configure themselves in order to achieve the highest possible speeds while delivering a minimal amount of interference.

This invention picked up the “Best of British Mobile Technology” award recently which adds more mileage to its performance claims, touted to be up to 30x fasters in areas of ultra low signal. Too bad it will retail for roughly $680, although those living in Irelad can pick it up for around $420 which is still a lot of bones when you think about it. Activation isn’t cheap either at around $400 per home depending on the customer’s location, while an urban environment might see activation fees that skim one grand per home using cable. Doesn’t seem like it is worth the money for the average Joe.
