Android Gingerbread 2.3.4 rumored to have native video calling

According to a tweet from someone who reportedly works with Samsung, we’ll be seeing the video calling function on Gmail brought over to the next version of Android. The tweet from @MAFiA303 said:

“Just had a video call using gmail on Nexus S. Impressive quality @googlenexus Gingerbread 2.3.4 #io2011”

Now we’ve all heard rumors about video calling arriving as a native feature of Android, does this mean that Google will officially announce it at this year’s I/O event? Another interesting feature to note about the tweet is the mention of “impressive quality”, which should mean Google has gotten it right. But alas, with no official word, we can’t confirm anything. Hopefully we’ll find out soon enough. It’s about time Google brought native video calling to their operating system – many more of their phones are beginning to sport front facing cameras now, and it should be a standard-issue feature soon enough.
