Apple files patent for an enhanced Smart Cover with flexible display

Apple’s Smart Cover for the iPad not only protects the display from scratches, but will also double up as a stand to prop up the device. If you thought the two-in-one feature was pretty awesome, a patent discovered by the folks at Engadget reveals a Smart Cover patent filed by Apple that would take the Smart Cover a step further. According to the patent, Apple believes that by building a flexible display into the Smart Cover itself, it will “greatly enhance” the functionality of the tablet. In the diagram above, it shows an example of how additional app icons can be display on the Smart Cover which we assume will also be able to display dedicated media controls, notifications and the likes. Additional drawings have also revealed that the display could also double up as a surface for drawing or be used as a virtual keyboard, allowing users to take full advantage of the iPad’s display without having an on-screen keyboard get in their way. No word if we’ll ever see this enhanced Smart Cover hit the shelves, but it certainly sounds like a good idea. What do you guys think? Yay or nay?
