New report corroborates multiple Nexus devices rumor

Earlier today we reported that thanks to an alleged hands-on report, it seems that LG could be the manufacturer of the next Nexus handset. However if earlier rumors of multiple Nexus manufacturers are to be believed, LG might not be the only one, and now thanks to a report by the folks at Digitimes, it seems that they are corroborating those rumors by stating that Samsung, LG, Sony and HTC are in line to release Nexus-branded handsets.

“Google aims to launch smartphones based on its Nexus 7 platform in cooperation with a number of smartphone branded vendors with Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Sony Mobile Communications and HTC likely to be potential partners, said the sources.

Google reportedly will allow branded vendors to set hardware specifications as well as looks of the forthcoming Nexus smartphones as long as the models are based on its latest native Android system, said the sources, adding that this approach seems to be acceptable to brand players, since Google apparently is keeping its promise of not offering preferential treatment to Motorola.”

Of course given that Digitimes’ track record has been hit and miss, perhaps approaching this with a hint of skepticism and caution might be a good idea, but what do you guys think? Would you like the idea of multiple Nexus devices, which in theory could be a stepping stone in putting an end to Android fragmentation?
