Survey reveals that half of US adults now own a smartphone or tablet

Have you ever wondered why you own a smartphone or tablet? Is it because it’s the trend and you don’t want to be left out, or is it because you see how smartphones and/or tablets have the potential to replace physical books or newspapers? Well a recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism has revealed that half of US adults now have a mobile connection to the internet via smartphones and/or tablets, a rather sizable gain compared to last year, which at the same time had implications on how news would be consumed and paid for in the future.

The research also showed that thanks to cheap Android tablets, there was an increase in tablet owners. We guess not everyone needs the latest or greatest to get access to the news! The survey also revealed that there was still some resistance with regards to having to pay  for content on mobile devices, and that instead of replacing the physical medium of news, smartphones and tablets provided an additional platform on which alternate news sources are accessed. You can check out the results of that survey on Journalism.org’s website.
