The term “YOLO” has been getting quite a bit of flack recently due to the way it has been used, so we have to wonder why Intel has decided to name one of their smartphones after it. Then again it might be a happy coincidence so who are we to judge, right? In any case Intel has announced that their Yolo smartphone will be making its debut on Kenyan carrier, Safaricom, making it the first Intel-powered smartphone for the continent. Priced at $126, it will come with a 500MB data plan and will support HSPA+ connectivity. As far as hardware is concerned, the Yolo will be packing an Intel Z2420 Atom processor under its hood which is capable of hitting speeds of 1.2GHz, a 3.5” display, a 5MP rear-facing camera and will come with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on board.
Now we’re familiar with Intel’s plans to compete in the mobile space against the likes of Qualcomm, NVIDIA and Samsung, but so far their efforts have been kind of slow, not to mention that their offerings leave much to be desired, at least as far as the market today is concerned. However it seems that Intel has a different idea and instead of competing in an already saturated market, they will be targeting emerging markets with affordable smartphones, the Yolo being one of them. We’re not sure when Intel plans to step into the high-end smartphone game, but it will be interesting to see what they can achieve when they do.
