Apple Will Reportedly Add LTE-A Support To iPhone 5S

LTE-A or LTE-Advanced has been in the news quite a lot recently. That’s because Samsung launched a “faster” version of the Galaxy S4, which supports LTE-A and has Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. Apple is reportedly looking to jump on this bandwagon as well, the company is said to be in discussions with South Korea’s SK Telecom to launch an LTE-A capable iPhone 5S. SK Telecom’s LTE-A network was switched on earlier this week, the only device out there that supports it right now is the aforementioned Galaxy S4, which is only available to customers in South Korea.

The Korea Times report cites an unnamed SK Telecom official saying that there’s no logical reason for Apple to not bring LTE-A support for iPhone 5S. Though it remains to be seen if this particular variant will only be released in that region or if it will be standard on the next generation iPhone. LTE-A networks aren’t common around the world right now. Even carriers in the U.S. don’t have it in place yet. Apple is expected to unveil its new iPhone later this year, possibly in September or October.
