Ford To Offer Free SYNC AppLink Upgrades For 3.4 Million Vehicles

sync-applinkUsually if one wanted to get in-vehicle features, whether it be a new stereo system or a connected dashboard, they would either have to upgrade it themselves or get a new model entirely that would feature said system. Well the good news for drivers who are looking forward to trying out Ford’s SYNC AppLink is that if you own a Ford vehicle 2010 or later, your vehicle should be eligible for a free upgrade to the SYNC AppLink system.

This is according to a recent announcement made by the company and based on their numbers, Ford estimates that this should add about an additional 3.4 million vehicles which feature the system. As it stands, Ford’s SYNC AppLink technology is installed on about one million vehicles, so with this free upgrade, we expect the total number of Ford vehicles on the road with the SYNC AppLink technology to be around 4.4 million, if not more.

For those wondering what the SYNC AppLink system is about, it’s basically a piece of in-car technology that allows drivers to use iOS and Android apps, such as Spotify, NPR, TuneIn, and more, and it also allows drivers to navigate the system using voice commands meaning that they will be able to keep their eyes on the road (and see where they’re going) while using the system.

Unfortunately Ford did not mention as to which vehicles specifically would be eligible for the upgrade, apart from the fact that they had to be 2010 or newer. Given that Ford has many models out there on the roads, we doubt this will apply to every single model, can it? Either way hopefully Ford will have more details to share come CES 2014, so check back with us later for the details.
