Sony Rumored To Buy Nintendo’s DRAM Manufacturing Plant

Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft are all competitors in the gaming industry, but it looks like Sony could soon be making a move that could possibly interfere with Nintendo’s business as the rumors are suggesting that Sony could be acquiring the semiconductor plant that is currently producing the DRAM chips used by Nintendo in their Wii U console. According to the reports, the deal is said to be worth ¥7 billion which is around $68 million after conversion. Apparently this deal has been in the works for a while but we guess it could finally be happening.

After the rumored takeover, Sony is expected to further invest ¥20 billion into the operation and will also absorb the existing staff as part of the deal. It is unclear as to what Sony might use the semiconductor plant for, but it seems that it might not have to do with gaming as reports claim that Sony could use the plant to help boost their CMOS smartphone sensor outputs by as much as 30%. Naturally neither Nintendo nor Sony have commented on the alleged acquisition, but at the same time it is said that Nintendo has managed to stockpile the DRAM chips to act as a buffer against any potential shortage.
