Sprint Wi-Fi Calling Launched

A few weeks back rumors started circulating about the possibility of Sprint Wi-Fi calling being launched in the near future. Its closest rival, T-Mobile, has offered Wi-Fi calling for quite some time now, so it makes sense for Sprint to follow suit as well. The carrier has formally announced the launch now, with Samsung Galaxy Mega and Galaxy S4 mini being the first devices to support Wi-Fi calling on Sprint after installing an incremental over-the-air update. The carrier says that this update will be pushed out to these devices over the next few weeks.

Sprint says that it has plans to expand Wi-Fi calling to additional devices later this year, but hasn’t revealed the names of all supported devices just yet. Through this free service, Sprint subscribers will be able to use voice and messaging service over existing public, home and office Wi-Fi networks. The service brings improved voice and data services particularly in those locations that previously had limited or no service at all. Domestic calling and messaging will be free, though standard CDMA international rates will apply. Wi-Fi calling will be activated via the Apps folder once the OTA update is installed, and once its activated, everything happens in the background automatically.
