Gmail Shelfie Another April Fool’s Attempt

Earlier this morning, we did bring you word on Google ushering in April Fool’s Day by giving you a chance to catch Pokemon. Well, it seems that there is yet another April Fool’s prank from Google that will involve the Google Shelfie, which is undoubtedly a wordplay on the “SHareable sELFIE”, if you will.

Google did want to make it sound legit in the beginning by mentioning how they launched custom themes in 2012 itself, asking folks to find “your perfect image and make Gmail your own.” Folks adhered to that, capturing photos of themselves and using them as the Gmail custom theme, where the term selfie started to arise. This term soon spread beyond email themes and has entered mainstream culture, so much so that it ended up as the Word of the Year in 2013 by Oxford Dictionaries.

The Gmail Shelfie happens to toy with the premise that you should not be selfish with your selfie, sharing it with the rest of the world so that other folks can work with your face in the background. Not too sure how popular this will be unless you are a renowned sports star, a babe, or a hunk. What do you think, will Google actually turn this into something real one day?
