EA Lists Games Affected By GameSpy’s Shutdown

Earlier in April, it was announced that GameSpy would be closing its doors for good come 31st of May. This means that there will be many games affected by this closure which would effectively be putting an end to multiplayer aspects of the games. EA has recently uploaded its Online Services Updates page where they have revealed a list of games that will be affected by the closure.

Some notable titles includes Battlefield 2, Battlefield 1942, Battlefield 2142, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, Crysis 2, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, and Star Wars: Battlefront II. However these games will only be losing their multiplayer functionality on the 30th of June, about a month after GameSpy is closing, so there’s good news for gamers who still play those games.

Some of these titles have been mentioned before, like Crysis and Battlefield, although in the case of the latter, EA did state that they will be trying to transition those games onto a separate server in order to retain its multiplayer functionality. However EA does not expect the transition to be anytime soon, so in the meantime they will be shutdown.

In a statement made by EA on its website, “Unfortunately, due to technical challenges and concerns about the player experience, we do not have a solution at this time. Online services for EA games on the GameSpy platform will be closed down at the end of June.” So, if you’ve particularly enjoyed any of the titles mentioned above, you should probably try to get as much playtime in as possible before multiplayer aspects of the game are removed.
