LG Might Sue Qualcomm If They Provide Modified Snapdragon 810 Chipsets To Samsung [Rumor]

Here’s an interesting rumor and potential drama for you guys. Remember an earlier rumor had suggested that Qualcomm could be working on a modified Snapdragon 810 chipset for Samsung that would supposedly solve its overheating issues? The thing is LG had previously claimed that overheating was not an issue so we’re not sure if modification was even necessary to begin with.

However a new report out of Korea (via G4Games) has revealed that LG isn’t too happy with Qualcomm’s decision and that they are considering suing the chipset manufacturer if they were to give Samsung the modified Snapdragon 810 chipsets. This could sound like the common wisdom to some since LG’s G Flex 2 is running the “regular” Snapdragon 810 (check our first G Flex 2 benchmarks here), but Qualcomm most certainly has no interest in alienating a good customer like LG, so we would take this rumor with a rather big dose of skepticism. LG said on the record that Snapdragon 810 has no overheating issues.

Then again this is just a rumor based on another rumor which is also based off yet another rumor, so it’s safe to say all of this is starting to look very convoluted. LG isn’t the only OEM to use the Snapdragon 810 and apart from a report that suggests that OnePlus might have issues with the chipset, we haven’t really heard anything else yet.

In fact the latest rumor is suggesting that Samsung’s decision to not go with Qualcomm is because they want to promote their own Exynos chipset, which Samsung believes is superior. In any case, all of this should be taken with a grain of salt for now, but hopefully we will hear something official soon that will put all of this to rest.

LG reached out to Ubergizmo, saying that “rumors regarding LG taking legal action against Qualcomm are unfounded and a complete fabrication of the facts. Given the source of this rumor, we’re surprised it’s being taken seriously at all.” (LG Spokesperson)

If there was an overheating problem, which both Qualcomm and LG deny, and if there was a fix for it, then it would make sense that all its customers would get the fixed version. It is in Qualcomm’s best interest to remain as neutral as possible and ship products that are as good as possible. That is the foundation of its business and the reason why it has so many OEM customers.
