Sharp Mini Phablet Hits The FCC

The FCC does have its fair share of interesting devices that pass through its revolving doors from time to time, and while we have seen what some claimed to be the upcoming Xperia Z4 from Sony, here is a rather rare appearance from Sharp – with a device that has been described in a most interesting manner by the Japanese firm, calling it a “dual mode hand held mini phablet.” Hmmm, that’s right, a mini phablet – won’t that make it a smartphone in terms of dimensions then? Ah well, as with any other unknown quantity, it would only be a matter of time before additional details are released so that we will have a better idea as to what’s going on.

Normally, a phablet would point to a smartphone device that has a rather large display, clearly larger than the average smartphone – 6” or above, and yet would be smaller than that of a tablet. Hence, a mini phablet does raise a fair number of questions, like the one above.

As to some of the details that have been shared via the FCC document, it points to support for quad-band 4G LTE, tri-band WCDMA 3G, carries Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, has GPS capability and plays nice with the NFC standard as well. Since Sharp does not carry a large stable of devices in the US, this is clearly an interesting development that we would like to keep tabs on.
