The latest version of Microsoft’s mobile platform is Windows Phone 8.1 Update a.k.a GDR1. Microsoft has already released a public preview of Windows 10 for Phones but the preview isn’t available for all devices and there is still a lot of time remaining before the new software is released for everyone. Could Microsoft release a Windows Phone update in the interim? It certainly seems possible.

Rumors about Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 or GDR2 have been floating since last year. It is possible that Microsoft might release this update before it rolls out Windows 10 for Phones.

It was originally expected that GDR2 will be released by the end of last year but the update never came. Now several references to the update have appeared online on the official Windows Phone Dev Center thus leading us to believe that there’s chance yet for this update.

Changes expected in GDR2 include customization options and settings for carriers that allow video over LTE, more phone languages, settings changes for VPN configurations and several other changes.

The entire changelog of this update isn’t available as yet because Microsoft has not officially announced the update. Microsoft hasn’t said up till now if it has any plans of releasing a second major update for Windows Phone 8.1 before it moves on to Windows 10 for Phones.

Microsoft might talk about this update during its press event at Mobile World Congress 2015 in Barcelona, the event takes place next month.
