It was back in October 2013 when BBM first made its way to Android. After decades BlackBerry had decided to take its iconic BlackBerry Messenger cross-platform. Now it’s available on iOS, Android and Windows Phone. Today the company announced that its Android app has crossed a major milestone. BBM for Android has been installed more than 100 million times.

According to the company this puts BBM in the “top tier of messaging apps on Google Play.” It look BBM a little over a year to achieve this milestone. It has also received some 3.7 million reviews from Android users with 2.4 million of them giving the app five stars.

The company also revealed that BBM users have sent more than one billion stickers and that it is close to achieving one billion “virtual goods impressions” in the BBM Shop monthly.

An important distinction to be made here is that this doesn’t mean BBM has brought in 100 million active users through Android. Many of those users might have tried the app once and then deleted it. Some might still have the app installed but they may no longer be using it.

Nevertheless BBM has had great momentum ever since it was opened up to other platforms as well. It is clear that BlackBerry is considering it as another business, as a separate revenue stream, given how it is slowly offering more and more content through the BBM Shop.

Most recently the company has allowed people to create custom BBM pins. This is a subscription based service that costs $2 per month.
