Facebook Removing Deactivated Accounts From Pages’ Like Counts

Facebook today warned Page owners that soon they are going to notice a drop in the number of likes that their Pages have. That’s because the company has decided to remove voluntarily deactivated or memorialized accounts from Pages’ like counts. Facebook says it is taking this step to make audience data even more meaningful for businesses so that data on the social network is always consistent and up-to-date.

It also mentions two primary benefits of this step. Businesses will get up-to-date insights as inactive Facebook accounts removed from Page audience will not be artificially boosting numbers. Moreover businesses will be able to better reach out to their target audiences as the correct data will allow them to make better informed decisions.

This will also help keep data consistent because Facebook already filters out likes and comments that are generated by deactivated or memorialized accounts from individual Page posts.

This is why Facebook today warned Page owners through a blog post that they are going to see a small dip in their number of Page likes as a result of this change. It reminds them that since these likes represent people who are already inactive on Facebook its not like Page owners will be adversely affected by this change.
